Why Cyriel Dessers handball before Rangers goal was NOT given as ‘screaming’ Hearts pointed to IFAB rules.
According to Richard Foster, Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers’ reported handball during a strike against Hearts was “accidental.”
The former Ibrox player believes referees Nick Walsh and Don Robertson in the VAR room were correct in not disallowing Philippe Clement’s side’s fourth goal. The Light Blues increased their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership by defeating Steven Naismith’s team 5-0, but there was considerable debate about the Dessers’ double.
Dujon Sterling fired a cross into the box that appeared to come off the Nigerian international’s arm, despite being positioned by his sides. The play broke across the six-yard box, and the frontman beat the Hearts defense to the bobbling ball beyond Zander Clark. When asked about a potential handball on BBC Sportscene, Foster quickly clarified that the 29-year-old did not mean the initial contact when meeting Sterling’s pass in.
The former Rangers defender believes the goal was unintentional and occurred after a few touches. I believe that is why it is permitted. I mean, if I’m Hearts, I’m shouting for it and wanting the handball, but his movement and poise in that position earned him a goal.”
According to IFAB, Foster’s key term is “accidental.” The regulations indicate that “accidental handball that leads to having a goal-scoring opportunity or a team-mate scoring a goal will no longer be considered an offence” – which supports whistler Walsh’s and the VAR team’s conclusion.
