Top 5 Destinations for Dak Prescott, Can the Cowboys Re-Sign Him?
According to Bleacher Report, Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are not in a rush to sign a new contract. This is not a great surprise, since many believe that despite a 12-5 regular season record in 2023, the squad is set to take a new direction.
It also doesn’t help that the Cowboys were already above the salary cap in 2023, and even with the new salary cap information, extending Prescott would be prohibitively expensive and tough to work with, given how many other veteran players the Cowboys already have on their roster.
With the revelation that the Cowboys and Dak Prescott are not hurrying to reach an agreement, the chance of him playing for a new team next season grows by the day. But where might he wind up? There are five possibilities.
1. Chicago Bears.
The Chicago Bears currently hold significant market power and leverage. They have the first overall NFL Draft pick and a quarterback in Justin Fields who is a solid option as either a backup or starting quarterback until another quarterback can be brought in, especially since he is still on a rookie contract that is tens of millions of dollars less than the $45-60 million that Dak Prescott will demand next season.
This trade would benefit both the Cowboys and the Bears. The Cowboys receive the first pick in the NFL Draft (presumably Caleb Williams), a good backup in case Williams is a bust, and save a significant amount of money. The Bears would receive a franchise quarterback who is affordable and poses no risk.
2. Washington commanders
The Commanders have a ton of cap space left. The team would have no problem affording Dak Prescott. The problem is that the Commanders do not have the same trade or player worth as the Bears, but they do have the second overall pick, which may be a nice deal if the Cowboys want a quarterback other than Caleb Williams. Still, if the Cowboys choose to get away of Dak Prescott, a trade for a slew of future draft picks and a few of competent players, particularly on the line of scrimmage, may be a good deal.
3. New England Patriots.
The New England Patriots are taking a new route under new coach Jerod Mayo. Without a guaranteed quarterback, the Patriots may be ready to pay a little more for a franchise quarterback than the fair market value.
New England boasts several players who could benefit the Cowboys, including Christian Barmore, Demario Douglas, and Trent Brown.The Patriots have only seven picks in this year’s draft, so each one is crucial to the team. Would they be willing to trade the third overall pick and a few players for Dak Prescott? Perhaps, but the Cowboys may also have high expectations.
4. Las Vegas Raiders.
The Las Vegas Raiders do not have a terrific first-round pick, as their first pick is 13. This will not provide much value to the Dallas Cowboys, but with a total of 12 picks, the Cowboys may be interested in taking 3-4 picks plus some players. Another difficulty is that the Raiders do not have a quarterback who the Cowboys would be interested in. With the 13th pick being the greatest possibility for the Cowboys, they are unlikely to acquire the good QB pick they want, and Aidan O’Connell will not do it either.
So, why is this on the list?. It is probable that a three-team deal may occur, and with the Raiders having a lot of cap room, they may be in the running to sign Dak Prescott.
5. Dallas Cowboys may keep Dak Prescott.
There is a potential that Dak Prescott will stay with the Cowboys. The Cowboys still have a lot of power, and if they can reach an agreement with Dak Prescott that works for both parties, he will most likely stay in Dallas.
The Cowboys finished 12-5 last year. For any other team in the league, this would be more than enough to warrant moving a starting quarterback who has thrown for more over 4,500 yards. But the Cowboys are unlike any other team, making this decision particularly intriguing.
