On March 13th, sixteen players for the Dallas Cowboys will be eligible for free agency. Nearly half of the sixteen made major contributions in 2023, so the Cowboys will have to make some tough choices over the course of the next month and a half.
We continue our series of free agent profiles today, examining Dallas’ 16 upcoming free agents. We look at another defense in our next profile, experienced CB Stephon Gilmore.

Year in Review: There were high standards for Stephan Gilmore to meet going into the 2023 season. The Cowboys’ bold trade for Gilmore, a 33-year-old cornerback, was their largest defensive offseason acquisition. Gilmore also provided a significant boost to the secondary.
We should take a close look at the 49ers’ desperate need for another game-winning play.
As fellow CB Trevon Diggs suffered a season-ending injury in September, Gilmore’s expectations skyrocketed. Gilmore had to take over as Dallas’ starting cornerback and perform at the level that the All-Pro Diggs were expected to.
Dallas needed Gilmore to be incredibly effective and help slow down the top offensive players on other teams, even if they didn’t need him to win defensive player of the year and be the best cornerback in the NFL like he did in 2019.
Fortunately for the Cowboys, the seasoned cornerback produced some outstanding play and was all they needed him to be. Gilmore’s 56.8% reception percentage for the season was his best since his DPOY campaign in 2019, as he only allowed 54 receptions on 95 targets. Gilmore recorded his highest number of points since that outstanding 2019 season with nine PBUs.
Dallas’ defense would not have been nearly as successful as it was the previous year without Gilmore. The Cowboys must be delighted with Gilmore’s season, and getting him for just a fifth-round pick was an excellent move, even though the veteran, who was battling with a rather serious shoulder ailment, did struggle a little in Dallas’ playoff loss to the Packers.
Free Agency Outlook: Given that Gilmore is 33 years old, it is quite expected that he will sign a one-year contract for his next contract. Pro Football Focus and Spotrac both predict that he will receive a one-year contract worth $10M and $11M, respectively.
Although there isn’t a lot of talent surrounding Gilmore at cornerback, fewer teams may be interested in the seasoned player if L’Jarius Sneed of the Chiefs and Jaylon Johnson of the Bears aren’t franchise-tagged and are free agents. Nevertheless, Gilmore has demonstrated that he is still capable of playing at a high level, and every club needs backup players.
It seems sense that Gilmore would want to sign with a team that can compete for a Super Bowl and offer him the opportunity to win another championship at this stage of his career. If this is the case, the current Cowboys and teams like the Texans, Lions, Bengals, and Chiefs could be suitable fits in free agency.
Cowboys Opinion: Gilmore has already made it known in the open this offseason that, should they be able to, he would like to return to Dallas. During Super Bowl week, Gilmore made the following remarks about the Cowboys and his possible comeback while speaking at Radio Row. “I firmly believe we have the components to reach our goals, and I want to help make that happen.”
A reunion makes a great deal of sense for all parties, and it appears that Cowboys defensive coach Mike Zimmer will advocate for Dallas’ front staff to bring Gilmore back.
Tyron Smith and Stephon Gilmore are the team’s two internal free agents in total. Dallas can’t afford to lose, so they’ll probably take every precaution to guarantee that both players will have the star on their helmets for the upcoming campaign.
Prediction: The Dallas Cowboys sign Stephon Gilmore to a one-year contract worth $8.5 million (with incentives of up to $11 million).
