Goalkeeper Jack Butland has brushed aside a row with an irritated Rangers supporter earlier in the year – believing the punter is pleased now.

The spat came in the wake of the 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen that saw Michael Beale lose his job – while Rangers fell seven points behind Celtic after just seven games of the season. Butland was eager to stand up to the fan and listen to what he had to say as the unhappy supporter referred to the Champions League money that was missed out on as well as defeats to Kilmarnock and Celtic early in the year.

Since then, the Light Blues have flipped the script and currently hold the lead in the Scottish Premiership title battle after racing to the summit of the league under Philippe Clement. Looking back on the flashpoint outside of Ibrox, the Rangers number one believed there was no need for camera phones – which led to the tape circling on social media – but is always happy to front up to fans.

Asked about the tape on BBC, Butland said: “Regardless of win, loss or draw I always stop and sign items for the kids and stuff like that afterwards. There just happened to be a few fans that wanted a little bit more interaction – which is OK.

“Happy to speak to them, always. But sometimes there is no need for a camera phones and stuff like that. We had a good chat.”

He was then challenged on if he felt the fan may have changed his tune if he met him now with Rangers at the top of the table. Butland laughed: “I have bumped into him a few times since. He’s pleased now.
