Blackburn prepares for arrival of the high-rise at Larkhill
THEY were the first tower blocks to be built in Blackburn.
The construction of three 14-story buildings was decided upon in 1963, and the so-called Larkhill Flats were completely occupied in two years.
Bowland House, Ribble House, and Pendle House were the names of the three blocks, which included 27 one-bedroom apartments and 53 two-bedroom apartments each.
Tenant balconies were one of the new housing’s features. On the ground level of every block, there was also a coin-operated laundry and a playground for kids.
The design proved so popular that three further blocks on similar lines were built at Queen’s Park.
