After joining Newcastle United for £31 million in the summer, Tino Livramento made an impression even though he had only started six Premier League games for Southampton.
The 21-year-old’s last league start for The Magpies came on New Year’s Day, a 4-2 loss at Liverpool, nearly two months ago.
Newcastle’s defense has remained flimsy, despite recent improvements in results. Since Livramento’s previous start, Eddie Howe’s team hasn’t preserved a clean sheet in the league, giving up 20 goals in the eight games that have come after.
This season, Livramento has played for Newcastle at both right and left back. However, considering the amount of goals United has given up from raids down their left side, Howe’s decision to stick with Dan Burn over the young player has come under scrutiny in recent weeks.
For Burn, Livramento has been substituted in each of the previous four Newcastle games. In those four games, the team gave up nine goals, although none of them occurred while the former Southampton player was playing.
Newcastle’s next game is away to Arsenal, one of the strongest teams in the league and winners of 21 goals in their past five league games.
Upon being questioned about how Livramento can return to the starting lineup, Howe said, “I see him [Livramento] as a full-back who can play both sides.
“What needs to be done for him to join the team? He must play well for every team he plays for, which in my opinion he does, and he must keep up his good training. All he can do is that.”
