Dozens of Firefighters Battle Large Blaze in Building Where Police Raided Cannabis Factory Days Earlier
A significant blaze broke out in a building just days after it was raided by police for housing a cannabis factory. Firefighters from multiple stations, including Merthyr, Treharris, Pontypridd, and Cardiff Central, were called to the scene to combat the fire, which engulfed the structure in flames.
The fire, which erupted late Thursday night, required extensive efforts from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing into the air, prompting authorities to advise nearby residents to keep their windows closed and stay indoors.
A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed that dozens of firefighters and several appliances were deployed to bring the blaze under control. “Our crews worked tirelessly throughout the night to tackle the fire and ensure the safety of the surrounding area,” they stated.
This incident follows a police operation earlier in the week in which the building was raided, uncovering a large-scale cannabis factory. Officers seized hundreds of plants and growing equipment as part of the operation, and investigations into the illegal activity were ongoing at the time of the fire.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene: “It’s shocking. We saw the police here a few days ago, and now the whole building is up in flames. It’s a real concern for the neighborhood.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, but investigations are underway to determine whether it is linked to the recent police raid or if foul play was involved. The fire service is also working to assess the structural integrity of the building, which has suffered significant damage.
South Wales Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward. A spokesperson said, “We are treating the fire as suspicious and are conducting a joint investigation with the fire service.”
This is not the first time a cannabis factory has been discovered in the area, raising concerns about the prevalence of illegal drug operations in South Wales. Local leaders are urging for stricter measures to combat such activities and ensure public safety.
The fire was eventually brought under control, and no injuries have been reported. However, the incident has left the local community shaken as they await further updates from authorities.
