Investigations are ongoing after a man in his 20s died in a crash on a major road on the Norfolk and Suffolk border.
Emergency services were called to the A143 Old Railway Road between Harleston and Bungay on Monday night at 10.25pm.
The crash involved a white Seat Ibiza and a black Mercedes-Benz EQA near Alburgh and Wortwell.
The driver of the Seat Ibiza, who was in his 20s, was declared dead at the scene.
As a parish council chairman gave his condolences to the dead man’s family, a police watchdog is also investigating the incident but the reasons why remained unclear this afternoon.
Mark Thompson, chairman of Alburgh Parish Council, remarked, “It’s very sad to hear that a young man has died.” “Our thoughts go out to the families of those affected.” The driver of the Mercedes, a man in his forties, was airlifted to Addenbrookes Hospital in critical condition. Police reported this afternoon that he is still in serious but stable condition in the hospital. A “big bang” and “shouting” were heard by one neighbor near the site. After contacting emergency services, he said “there was a shower of blue lights” before an air ambulance landed in the marsh field near where the accident took place.
Suffolk Police sent this incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after previous police contact, which is regular procedure. Suffolk Police has not explained why it submitted itself to the IOPC. The IOPC has also been requested to respond. Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or the driving habits of either car before to the accident. Anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage should phone 101 and quote crime reference 36/4747/25.
