Celtic dwarf Rangers in transfer income as player trading model pays off long term.
The champions have sold multiple big players, like Virgil Van Dijk, for large sums of money, whilst the Gers have only generated significant gains on three stars.
Over the last ten seasons, Celtic has earned £33 million in transfer fees, while Rangers have lost £10 million.
The CIES Football Observatory has analyzed teams’ total transfer volume (incoming and leaving) during the last 10 seasons, as well as their net transfer cost over the same time, the previous five seasons, and the current season. And the stats demonstrate that the champions’ player trading concept is working as intended.
Several players, including Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper, Fraser Forster, Virgil Van Dijk, Moussa Dembele, Jeremie Frimpong, Odsonne Edouard, Josip Juranovic, and Jota, were sold for significant sums after signing for a low fee.
And Kieran Tierney’s £25 million transfer to Arsenal in 2019 was pure profit after rising through the ranks. Rangers’ outgoings have resulted in much lower fees over the last decade. Only Nathan Patterson’s move to Everton, Calvin Bassey’s club record transfer to Ajax, and Joe Aribo’s move to Southampton generated considerable revenue.
Combined with the Gers’ spending, this has resulted in a £10 million transfer deficit over the last ten years. The last five seasons have seen a net spend of +£7m, with Celtic significantly ahead at +£9m.
However, the Light Blues are losing £5 million this season as a result of Michael Beale’s summer spending spree. Celtic, however, is £6 million in debt.
