Rangers and Celtic are EFL friendly options as club with ex-Ibrox star and boyhood Hoops fan plan testimonial.

Rangers and Celtic might be involved in a day to remember against Sheffield Wednesday.

Rangers and Celtic might face Sheffield Wednesday in a testimonial match this summer.

Pre-season preparations are beginning, with Liam Palmer due to be honored at Hillsborough following 14 seasons with the Owls. According to The Star, there is ‘increasing confidence’ that a testimonial could eventually take place for the guy who has been capped eight times by Scotland.

Palmer’s representation are working with Sheffield Wednesday to see if a game can be scheduled in the lead-up to next season, but the 32-year-old is now out of contract in the summer, despite expressing a wish to stay in S6.

Celtic or Rangers might be part of those celebrations. According to The Star, Palmer said that a match versus Celtic or Rangers would be ideal, but allowed that it could be logistically challenging.

He remarked, “We’re just putting everything together and making commitments with the club. For the time being, it’s about looking ahead but not too far ahead, if that makes sense; yet, these things require some planning.

“Things are going off in the background, and I have the club’s approval, so it’s just a matter of when and where. In my opinion, we’d aim for a pre-season friendly, and I’d like to bring a large team with a large fan base to Hillsborough if feasible.

“It’s difficult because I don’t want it to seem like I’m retiring. I still have a lot to say, and while I understand that it is my

testimonial, I don’t want it to be all about me. A pre-season game with my kids for a ripple would be ideal.

It is not something that happens very often, but it should be properly planned, and I am confident that when the moment is perfect, it will come together.”

The Wednesday squad already has a Rangers and Celtic feel to it. Josh Windass played with the Light Blues between 2016 and 2018. Bannan, however, is a lifelong Celtic fan who attended the Hoops academy as a child.
