Astros Slugger Talks Contract Extension At Spring Training

Astros Slugger Talks Contract Extension At Spring Training.

Kyle Tucker has spoken with the Houston Astros about extending his contract beyond his team’s control after the 2025 season.

The Houston Astros’ contract extension with Kyle Tucker is currently being discussed but not implemented.

Tucker arrived to spring training in West Palm Beach on Monday and spoke with media about a range of topics, most notably

the possibility of a contract extension with the Astros.

Tucker told MLB.com that talks about an extension are just that, and that there is no actual offer.

That’s not a problem for Tucker for now, as he’s eager to work with the Astros as spring training progresses.

However, the Astros are now considering potential extensions. Along with Tucker, there is a desire to reach an agreement with

third baseman Alex Bregman, who is a year older than Tucker and eligible for free agency.

Bregman may become a free agency after this season, and the Astros are in talks with him and his representation.

According to general manager Dana Brown, there are currently no offers for Bregman.

It’s likely that the Astros are taking a deliberate approach after extending Jose Altuve to a five-year, $125 million contract and signing reliever Josh Hader to a five-year, $95 million deal in free agency. Last offseason, the Astros signed pitcher Cristian Javier to a five-year, $64 million contract.

It’s also early in spring training to do anything. However, the Astros must make a decision about both guys.

Tucker will earn $12 million this season, according to an agreement made prior to the arbitration deadline. Tucker and the Astros attempted but failed to reach an agreement on an extension last year.

Now, the 2023 Astros Player of the Year may be more expensive to obtain.

He is currently a two-time All-Star, a Gold Glove winner in 2022, and has finished in the top 20 in MVP voting the previous two seasons.

An extension is projected to cost the Astros at least $100 million, depending on the length of the contract. Given his output, it could be a good investment.
