Paul Cook has apologised for any offence caused before Chesterfield’s match at Grimsby Town on Saturday.
Before kickoff, the Mariners paid respect to supporters who died in 2024. Their photos flashed on the huge screen inside Blundell Park, and a piper performed in the center circle.
Some Spireites fans have been accused of being ‘disrespectful’ for singing during the homage as manager Cook approached to thank them, as he does before every game.
However, those in the away end have stated that they were ignorant of the homage because it was not announced over the tannoy and their view from the stand was restricted. The DT attended the game and can confirm that it was difficult to hear the piper because no microphone was given.
The Spireites said in a statement: “Please be aware that many of the club officials and supporters were unaware of the Fallen Mariners memorial taking place before kick-off in yesterday’s game against Grimsby Town Football Club. Due of a lack of awareness, they did not pay tribute as they would have regularly done.
Cook continued, “I always go over to acknowledge our supporters at away games, and I did so unknowing that an homage was taking place. I am not a disrespectful person, and I apologise to anyone who was upset in any manner, as it was clearly not my aim.”
Grimsby Town vice chairman Jason Stockwood took to social media to say he met with Chesterfield’s directors, who apologised for the’misunderstanding.’ He wrote: “That club is run by a really good bunch of people, and we’ll make sure to communicate things like this more clearly in the future.” Our love and thoughts are with all of the families.”
