Frank Lampard shares Bristol City verdict after Robins’ defeat to Coventry City at CBS Arena
Despite maintaining that the Robins were “good opposition” at the CBS Arena, Frank Lampard has acknowledged
that he thought Coventry City deserved their victory over Bristol City.
Liam Manning’s Reds extended their winless run away from Ashton Gate to six matches on Saturday afternoon
as they were beaten 1-0 by the Sky Blues in the West Midlands, with Brandon Thomas-Asante’s goal the difference
between the two sides.
The After being slipped past Luke McNally by Jack Rudoni, the Coventry attacker broke the tie halfway through the
second half by crashing past Max O’Leary in the City net. However, Yu Hirakawa’s shot just missed the post with the
game’s final kick, giving the Robins a late chance to tie the score.
Lampard thought his team’s performance was worthy of the victory because they displayed character both in and out
of possession during the 90 minutes, even though Manning thought they had done enough to leave the CBS Arena
with a point.
After the game, Lampard said, “I’m pleased; it was a tough match.” ” We deserved to win the game based on our
opportunities overall, despite the opposition’s strong play.
“Excellent character, perseverance, and effort to finish the game with a clean sheet. We had enough chances to score,
and we scored one of our more difficult chances, which was a fantastic goal, so we’re really happy.”
Since Lampard replaced Mark Robins in the Sky Blues’ dugout, results have been mixed. However, Coventry’s form
at home has been rather impressive, and following Saturday’s win over Bristol City, they are unbeaten in all of the six
games they have played at the CBS Arena under the management of the former Chelsea and England midfielder.
Ellis Simms and Rudoni are still among their many good players, but they haven’t had their top players, Haji Wright
and Ephron Mason-Clark, in a while. Lampard has had to alter his strategy in recent weeks due to injuries to that
duo and other senior players, and the 46-year-old believed the victory over the Reds was a positive step for his
revamped team.
“We’ve changed the system a bit; it helps us in ways but it’s probably more at the moment because of some of the
that we’ve got out,” said Coventry’s head coach. We now have to determine how to maximise the shape and be as
effective as we can because of it.
“The front three playing off one another, as well as combinations like Rudi [Jack Rudoni] and Jay [Dasilva] on that
side of the pitch. It was likely the sentiment at halftime: “Okay, we’ve got some good stuff here, but how can we clean
up a little bit in the last third of the pitch to turn good moments into really good ones?””While there is much room
for improvement, we are witnessing some positive developments. We must maximise the best outcome possible
given the manner in which we are playing. Can you get the most out of two attackers like Ellis and Brandon? How
skilled are they at link-up and hold-up? It was undoubtedly a step forward in many ways, but I would argue there are
still a lot of steps to take.
