Alistair Johnston has signed a new contract with Celtic until 2029, with manager Brendan Rodgers complimenting the defender’s “phenomenal work ethic and attitude” and “honest love for the game.”
The Canadian international joined the Scottish champions in the end of 2022 and has played 79 games, scoring six goals.
Former manager Ange Postecoglou signed the 26-year-old from CF Montreal, and he has established himself as a regular in Rodgers’ squad.
Johnston stated, “I am overjoyed to extend my contract with Celtic. I received a fantastic welcome to the club in 2022, and I’ve had the best of times ever since, enjoying every minute of being a member of such a wonderful institution, and I wanted to stay.
“It’s an absolute honour to wear that renowned jersey every week, and to have achieved so much success with my teammates has been really rewarding. But, of course, we want more, and that is our priority.
“It’s a true pleasure to work day in and day out in such a terrific environment, with the gaffer and the staff who are so driven for success, and with such a great group of guys on the team.
“Of course my team-mates have been everything to me – it is a brilliant dressing room I am privileged to be part of, with real quality guys beside me and I know we are all, collectively looking to work as hard as we can to bring our fans even more success over the next few years.”
Brendan Rodgers, Celtic manager, added: “It is fantastic news for the club and our fans that Ali has agreed to a new contract.”
“In a relatively short space of time, he has established himself as a tremendous Celtic player, demonstrating real skill and consistently producing for us week in and week out.
“He has an incredible work ethic and attitude, brilliant hunger and optimism, an honest love for the game, and a genuine drive to develop in all he does.
“These are the attributes that define a great player, and he has undoubtedly been that for Celtic.
“Everyone at the club felt it crucial that we extend Ali’s contract with Celtic and I am delighted that we have been able to do this.”
