Former England international publicly claims Villa can win the Premier League this season

Les Ferdinand has now likened Aston Villa’s chances of winning the championship to those of Leicester City in 2016 following a string of outstanding performances.

During his appearance this morning on talkSPORT, Ferdinand said that Villa should not be forgotten.

When Alan Brazil, a pundit, brought up the title battle and said it was now a three-horse debate, Ferdinand quickly shot back.

Ferdinand supported Unai Emery, believing that there could be another narrative of a fairy tale.

“Is the Premier League a three horse race between City, Liverpool, and Arsenal?” inquired Brazil.

“I am really impressed with what Aston Villa are doing right now,” Ferdinand retorted.

“Many years ago, we observed a Leicester squad that many believed had little chance of winning the league, but they consistently produced strong performances that ultimately led to the team’s victory.

“Aston Villa at the moment I would not discount them being in the race right until the end.”

Of course, a big part of Villa’s success this season has been owed to their captain, John McGinn.

Perhaps when drawing parallels, Ferdinand would compare Villa’s McGinn to former Leicester captain Danny Drinkwater.

Who incidentally did still have one regret regarding his own time at Aston Villa.

Les Ferdinand believes Villa can achieve a Leceister story this season

This season, McGinn has excelled for Emery, setting a great example on and off the field.

Additionally, the club may only be concerned with one thing when it comes to a title push.

Villa can take care of a few potentially problematic issues before January, even if they have no control over the play of Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, who may prove to be too powerful to compete with in the end.

Even if Jon Duran, 20, is a very talented player, it’s possible that he isn’t ready to replace Ollie Watkins should he miss a lot of games.

And ahead of the Euros fans will be praying that isn’t the case anyway, but Micah Richards did recently share his concern regarding squad depth.

Of course, Ferdinand might point out that Leicester didn’t have a ton beyond their starting eleven when defending Villa.

It’s certainly going to be a fascinating story to follow, one that could cemented in the history books.
