Malik Tillman reflects on Rangers vs Celtic ‘tension’ from away fan ban and ‘religion’ element of rivalry

The American had a full season of fixtures against Gers’ rivals in Glasgow

Malik Tillman thought back on the contentious away fan bans while recalling the tense Rangers vs. Celtic derby

during his time at Ibrox.

The 21-year-old American international, who played 43 games in all competitions and scored 12 goals and

dishevelled five assists, had a great season on loan at the Gers. The attacker said it’s one of the biggest derbies he’s

ever participated in, but he regrets not being able to defeat the Hoops in any of his games against the rivals.

Both Rangers and the Celts reduced their allotment for away wagerers to 700 during his tenure before doing away

with them completely and offering no away support within the stadiums.

And Tillman will always have that in addition to the history of the intense competition.

“Whoa. When questioned about the derby, he told the Athletic, “A lot of tension.” While I was there, we sadly didn’t

win any of them, but it was still a positive experience.

“I recall that following the first game against Celtic, the stadium was closed to outside spectators, meaning that the

entire crowd was against you. No one will applaud if you score. It was insane and entirely strange.
