David Moyes targets ‘excellent’ Rangers hero for Everton after emotional return.
David Moyes’ emotional homecoming to Everton could already have an impact on the future of one former Rangers player.
It could now also alter things for a second. The seasoned and crafty Scot was brought in to try to bring the Toffees back on track and out of relegation jeopardy. The turnaround in results has yet to occur, but they play another struggling team, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, at home today and will want to capture all three points. Nathan Patterson has been on the outskirts under Sean Dyche, but the Englishman did not appear willing to let him depart during this window. However, Everton and Moyes are now linked with right-backs Devyne Rensch and Milan van Ewijk (Goodison News).
That might allow Patterson to move out on loan or possibly permanently, and Rangers fans would want to see him return. The Gers academy product previously stated that he has ‘unfinished business’ at Ibrox.
David Weir wanted at Everton
However, just as Patterson is leaving Goodison Park, another Rangers player could be arriving. According to Sun columnist Alan Nixon, Moyes wants David Weir, Brighton’s current technical director, to join their Premier League rivals. The 54-year-old, like Moyes, would feel an emotional draw because he spent eight years playing for the Toffees after leaving Hearts. He also played under Moyes, so working with him again could be an option. Everton’s new American owners are reportedly looking to shake things up behind the scenes, and recruitment chief Kevin Thelwell and top scout Dan Purdy could be let off.
Moyes is said to be set to have a massive say and Weir could then go in as part of the new look system if he opts to move from Brighton.
Weir has ‘excellent knowledge’
Weir conducted some coaching at Everton when he first retired from football, working at their academy. After being interviewed for the first-team management position and being rejected, he eventually took over at Sheffield United. That would be his sole job as the main guy, and after working as Mark Warburton’s assistant at Brentford, he had the opportunity to return to Ibrox when the Englishman took over as manager. The pair parted ways after less than two years and briefly worked together at Nottingham Forest before Weir joined Brighton to manage their loan players. Brighton appointed their deputy technical director after a promotion to technical director. David Weir, will now step up and assume the role of acting technical director.
