Danny Röhl answer deepens Michael Smith mystery as clubs circle on Sheffield Wednesday striker
After missing Sheffield Wednesday’s second straight game, Michael Smith’s future has become even more uncertain.
After trying to sign the forward throughout the summer, League One promotion contenders Wrexham renewed their
interest in him, according to a report published last week by The Star. Other teams are reportedly interested, and a
formal transfer approach is anticipated during this transfer season.

Despite missing out on Danny Röhl’s last two squads—the FA Cup exit at Coventry City last week and Sunday’s loss
at Leeds United—Smith has shown himself to be a valuable option for the Owls this season, scoring five goals and
dishing out six assists in a season in which he has been used primarily as a substitute.
Save for an August Carabao Cup clash at Grimsby Town, they are the only two matchday squads from which he has
been omitted this season and the timing raises speculation Wednesday could be open to a potential deal.
During his two and a half years at S6, Smith has made 111 appearances, scoring 29 goals and dishing out 14 assists.
Smith, a 33-year-old target, is expected to have a contract expiration date at the end of the current campaign. When
asked if Smith was likely to leave the club this month, Röhl refused to elaborate.
“We shall see,” he said. The fact that Michael and I are aware of the circumstances is crucial. And this is sufficient.
Asked if he could glean any more information on what that ‘situation’ was, Röhl simply replied: “No.”
The enquiries come as the Owls are about to embark on a significant week. The German coach said that Röhl and
Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri would meet for crucial talks as the transfer market continues, following weeks
of back and forth on the two parties’ relationship. Although Wednesday has set goals and reached agreements, the
team has not yet moved forward with official talks.
