Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor bemoaned the ‘worst day of his life’ after seeing two penalties saved by Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Isidor’s sadness was palpable, as the Frenchman appeared on the edge of tears as he approached the away fans who still backed him. The striker apologised and held his hands in a prayer position, as if asking supporters to forgive him, while Sunderland and Burnley players tried to soothe him. Isidor wrote on social media after the game, “Feel like a large slap in the face, and the saddest day of my life, because we all know how much I love this club.”Even if only actions on the pitch can make forgiveness, I would like to apologise on my teammates, every single fan and all the people of this club for what happened tonight.

I’m ashamed, but I promise you that I’ll come back stronger! See you on Tuesday, HWTL. In the 84th minute, Black Cats striker Eliezer Mayenda slipped Isidor through with a brilliant pass, but the latter was touched by Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley and sent sprawling to the ground. However, replays revealed that the contact from Egan-Riley, who was later booked, came from outside the box. Trafford tried every trick in the book to delay Isidor’s penalty, including tightening his laces and re-strapping his gloves.

The stalling tactics were effective, as Trafford predicted properly and dived to his right to block Isidor’s attempt. But Isidor would have a chance to redeem himself and help Sunderland win all three points in the final seconds of the game. Sunderland left back Dennis Cirkin was hauled down inside the area by Burnley’s Oliver Sonne, causing the referee to point to the penalty spot yet again. Trafford quickly had cramps and drew a yellow card for timewasting. However, it proved to be a masterstroke. Isidor bravely stepped up to take another penalty, but Trafford saved his attempt after he targeted the same place.
