Darwen’s ‘crown jewels’ to return after 50 years

A ceremonial mace is returning to a town after being locked away for almost 50 years.

The Darwen mace, which was made in 1878, has been safely housed in Blackburn Town Hall since 1974.

It is known as “Darwen’s crown jewels” and includes a scroll that was presented to the first Freeman of Darwen in the early 1900s.

Next year, it will be relocated to the town’s heritage centre on Railway Road. The event will also include a civic ceremony.

Prior to their transfer, a safe cabinet is being constructed to house the memorabilia, and the specifics of its security and insurance coverage are being established.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Sir Jake Berry, the Member of Parliament for Rossendale and Darwen, asked for the return of the mace over 14 years ago.

“I am delighted that Darwen’s crown jewels are finally, at long last, being returned to where they belong and they can take their rightful place in the heart of our town,” said the mayor.

The chair of the Darwen Heritage Centre, Albert Gavagan, has also praised it.

Mr. Gavagan stated: “We are quite pleased with the advancements being made and are eager to have the artefacts on display in our new, safe museum-quality case.

“In the New Year, we’re organising a public event to commemorate the event.

“The heritage centre is the perfect place for people to be able to see them along with all the other items of importance to Darwen that we have.”
