‘After five’ – Chris Wilder admits Leeds United factor in relentless Sheffield United transfer bid
The Blades, who defeated Norwich City 2-0 on Saturday to take the championship lead, are hoping that Sheffield Wednesday’s performance at Elland Road tonight will maintain them in the lead. Following his club’s 2-0 loss at Elland Road earlier in the season, Wilder publicly stated his opinion that Leeds were the greatest team in the division. Speaking on Saturday, he stated that one of the things propelling Bramall Lane’s recruitment attempts this month was Daniel Farke’s squad strength. Ben Brereton Díaz, who attended yesterday’s Blades game, is rumored to be nearing a comeback, and Sheffield United is reportedly close to surpassing Sunderland in their pursuit of Leicester City striker Tom Cannon for a permanent deal. However, Wilder, who started the season with a tiny team and has had to deal with serious injuries to important players, wants more.
“I anticipate signing all five of the new players we’re pursuing,” he stated. “We’re talking to our top targets, we’re almost at three, and from a financial and character standpoint, they all want to join us for what should be a successful final 19 games of the season. However, as we discussed on Friday, it’s not that simple. “I’m thrilled with the owners’ and CEO Stephen Bettis’s cooperation in promoting our necessary actions. It is necessary. We’re stretched and have injuries. We believe Jes [Rak-Sakyi] and Vini [Souza] will return on Tuesday, but I won’t bet on it.
“Stephen, I, and the recruitment team will continue to work tirelessly to help the lads. I told them that there would be no excuses before to the [Norwich] game.We lost a few guys because Kieffer Moore and Brooksy Brooks were unable to play, but we are adding players to help this group. Not to replace anyone, but to improve us. Because we should be aware of the depth and strength of the teams in our immediate vicinity. That will be necessary. We will be physically tested during the final 20 games, so we need those choices and answers to the small problems that are preventing us from winning.
In contrast, Leeds anticipates a somewhat more subdued January transfer market. Pascal Struijk’s hamstring injury will be rescanned next week to determine its full effect, and Farke thinks they will need to keep an eye on transfer options if he is sidelined for months as opposed to weeks. In addition, he is adamant that, should the chance present itself, they will only add elite players that enhance the team.
