Tributes have been paid after the death of former Norwich City footballer Garry Brooke.
The 64-year-old midfielder, who won the FA Cup twice, died on Saturday (January 18) following a protracted illness.
Norwich City Football Club issued a statement saying: “All at Norwich City are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former player Garry Brooke after a battle with illness.
“Garry represented the club during the 1980s and was part of the Second Division title-winning squad of 1985/86.”All of us at the club send our condolences to Garry’s loved ones during this difficult time.”
He appeared 20 times for the Canaries, helping them regain promotion to the top division, before leaving in 1987 to join Dutch club Groningen.
Brooke joined Carrow Road in 1985, after the Canaries were demoted to Division 2.
He had previously played 101 games for his first club, Tottenham, which he joined as a 10-year-old in 1971, scoring 18 goals.
During his time with the London club, he won the FA Cup twice in 1981 and 1982. He was also a member of Tottenham’s UEFA Cup-winning squad in 1984.
Brooke, who was born in Bethnal Green, later played for Wimbledon, Stoke, Brentford, Colchester United, and Reading after leaving Carrow Road.
Tottenham paid homage to Brooke on Saturday. In a statement, the club said: “We are heartbroken to learn of the death of our former player Garry Brooke.
“A two-time FA Cup winner and member of our UEFA Cup-winning group in the early 1980s, Garry died on Saturday morning at the age of 64 after a long fight with illness.
“Garry is survived by his ex-wife Jackie and their two children, Jade and Buddy.” At this tragic time, our thoughts are with his family and friends.
