Henry Should Sign with Cowboys, Argues Michael Irvin
You’re a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, right? Do you believe that in 2024 “America’s Team” should go all in and sign two-time NFL rushing champion Derrick Henry? Irvin claimed on FS1’s Undisputed that Derrick Henry “hasn’t gotten the love that he deserves.” “Please come on over. Put that star on your helmet, friend, and allow us to lavish you with our love!
Irvin talks about the Titans’ “love,” but we have no idea what he means by it. At thirty, he is regarded as a living legend who will eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Tennessee paid him a large sum of money for his efforts.
But he is free now, for sure. Because Henry works out here in DFW throughout the offseason, there has been a lot of speculation about a Dallas link during the past several offseasons. While these reports have never been verified in terms of the Cowboys’ front-office ambitions, they do at least provide an easy way to complete a move.
All Dallas has to do is prioritize signing him. CowboysSI.com has been told that the Cowboys prefer the idea of using, say, a Day 2 draft pick on a running back while also likely turning the page from Tony Pollard, a free agent who was franchise-tagged a year ago at $10 million. It is our impression that Dallas does not plan on spending $10 million per year on a running back again any time soon.
Would Henry “put the star on his helmet and feel the love” if he had to play for less time than that? According to one estimate, he may cost $4.6 million for a one-year contract. Considering that Henry just finished his sixth season with over 1,000 yards from scrimmage and double-digit touchdowns, we will accept that such a notion is significantly more alluring than investing twice that. Remarkably, he led the NFL in carries for the fourth time in five years last year.
Having said all of that, Irvin stated, “Let’s see Derrick Henry get 2,000 yards for the Dallas Cowboys,” and you Cowboys Nation members need to make sure you are approaching the idea of Derrick-to-Big-D with greater objectivity. A season with 2,000 yards for a thirty-year-old power back on a club that already has Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb as its pass-and-catch duo? It doesn’t seem plausible at all that number. However, what if there is a tangible figure?
