Astros’ Offseason Bullpen Acquisition Fighting For Roster Spot

Astros’ Offseason Bullpen Additions Competing for A Spot on the Team.

This offseason, the Houston Astros added a pitcher who is currently competing for a position on their Major League roster.

One of the Houston Astros’ biggest offseason transactions was dealing for rookie reliever Dylan Coleman, before giving Josh Hader a huge contract.

The San Diego Padres selected the 27-year-old in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

He pitched for them for two seasons in their minor league system, but the COVID-19 epidemic forced them to postpone the 2020 season, which he had to miss.

After that, in November 2020, the Padres transferred him to the Kansas City Royals, where he was able to advance through their system and eventually make his Major League debut in 2021.

He only made five appearances that year, but in 2022 he was quite active, making 68 appearances with an ERA+ of 148 and recording an ERA of 2.78.

But Coleman struggled last season, going down to their Triple-A club for 32 outings after recording an 8.84 ERA in 23 games.

The young pitcher was acquired via trade by the Astros, who decided to take a risk on him.

To restart his career, Coleman is trying to put together a solid Spring Training showing and land on the Opening Day roster.

“I think everything will work itself out if I’m where I want to be. I’m really confident in my skills and abilities,” he remarked, according MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.

Without a doubt, Houston has a history of transforming relievers coming off rough stints into valuable members of their bullpen.

Coleman is aware of this and eager to put it into practice.

“It goes without saying that this place has a winning culture, but what really interests me is the development. There are guys here who can really focus on it and help you get back on course more quickly. It’s very beneficial,” he remarked.

When the Astros got him, they had some idea of what they were getting. Throughout his career, he faced Houston three times and never let up a run against their all-star lineup.

When he dons an Astros uniform this season, they’re hoping he can contribute that caliber of pitching to their squad.
