Woman dies after huge fire at block of flats

A woman was found dead after a fire ripped through a block of flats.

Firefighters were rushed to the five-story Nisbet House on Homerton High Street in east London yesterday morning.

The fire damaged part of a ground-floor unit, and when firemen entered, they discovered a woman in her 40s, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police are presently investigating the cause of the fire, although the Met said it is not thought to be suspicious.

The fire department was called to the area shortly after 8.20 a.m. on Saturday, and after battling the fire with six fire engines and 30 firemen, it was brought under control by approximately 9.40 a.m.

A fire department spokeswoman said: “Sadly, a woman has died as a result of a flat fire in Hackney.”

Six fire engines and approximately 30 firefighters responded to a fire on Homerton High Street in a five-story building.

The fire caused damage to part of a ground-floor unit. A woman was discovered in the flat and tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: ‘Her next of kin have been notified, and our sympathies are with them during this terrible time.

‘An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. It is not thought to be suspicious.
