Westerlo of Belgium signed two forwards in the January transfer window, Isa Sakamoto and Islam Slimani, raising the possibility of one of their current players leaving.
Sunderland were prominently connected with a move for Matija Frigan at the end of the week, with claims of interest from both Hungary and Belgium.
According to Saturday’s Gazet van Antwerpen, the 21-year-old is on Sunderland’s ‘radar’, but the situation appears to be more serious.
Sunderland are thought to have had a long-term interest in the teenager, dating back to when he was playing for HNK Rijeka in Croatia.
Frigan is claimed to be interested in a move to English football, and talks are thought to be taking place to complete the transfer in the coming days.
The move and present offer are based on a loan with an obligatory €15 million transfer if Sunderland win promotion to the Premier League.
