Frank Lampard confirms free agent is training with Coventry City

Coventry City has offered Jamie Paterson the option to train with the squad to stay healthy while he is between clubs.

Frank Lampard has revealed that Jamie Paterson, a free agency forward born in Coventry, is practicing with his side. Paterson, who recently turned 33, is helping to flesh out Lampard’s squad throughout the week as they prepare for their upcoming Championship games, while also maintaining his personal fitness levels while he is between clubs.

Paterson began his career at Walsall, before moving to Nottingham Forest in 2013. He is best known for his time at Bristol City, where he played over 150 matches, notably against Lampard’s Derby County.

Paterson joined Swansea City in 2021 and played regularly in the Championship until heading to the MLS last year. He reconnected with his former Saddlers coach Dean Smith with Charlotte FC. He opted not to extend his stay in the United States and has returned to England – specifically the Midlands.

Lampard describes the scenario as mutually beneficial for both parties. However, it is currently a training-only arrangement with no contract provided by the Sky Blues.

“I know Jamie since I faced him at Derby and he was at Bristol. He is a well-known Coventry native and lives nearby. He doesn’t have a club at the moment,” Lampard revealed.

“It’s a good experience; we’re helping him get fit and train. Our squad is a little strained at the moment, but I believe that also benefits us. We’re helping each other out in the short term, and that’s it. It’s merely practice for the time.”

Paterson will spend the interim period reuniting with former Swansea teammates Joel Latibeaudiere and Jake Bidwell, as well as Bristol City counterpart Jay Dasilva.
