A number of roadways in central were closed while police investigated what they described as “a tragic incident,” which resulted in the death of a 74-year-old man.
The public has been warned not to share disturbing footage and photographs circulating on social media following a car accident that killed a 74-year-old man. Officers were contacted at 7.25 p.m. on Saturday when a man was hit by a single-decker bus in Edinburgh’s Cowgate neighbourhood.
Several highways were stopped for investigations but have subsequently reopened. Sergeant Louise Birrell of Edinburgh’s Road Policing Unit said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the man’s family and friends.”
“Extensive investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
“Officers have spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time and work is ongoing to check public and private CCTV footage”.
‘A sad incident’
Chief Inspector Trisha Clark, the local area commander, added: “We are aware of videos and images circulating on social media that are causing distress to the deceased’s family and those who are viewing them inadvertently.”
“We would like to ask members of the public not to share them out of respect for his family, and to report them to the appropriate social media site to prevent further distribution.
“There has been a lot of conjecture, and I’d like to reassure the local community that this was an isolated event that poses no risk to the general population.
“It was a horrible situation. We are investigating a crash, and our road police officers, assisted by local officials, are continuing to conduct investigations.”
Police Scotland has asking anyone with concerns or information that could help the inquiry to get in touch.
