Regis Le Bris on Sunderland’s Burnley draw & Wilson Isidor penalties

Wilson Isidor missed two Sunderland penalties at Burnley

REGIS Le Bris has backed Wilson Isidor to quickly put the devastation of his two late penalty misses at Burnley behind him.

Sunderland had two glorious opportunities to turn one point into three in the dying minutes at Turf Moor, but Isidor was twice denied by Burnley keeper James Trafford from the spot.

Le Bris says Isidor and Sunderland will learn from the pain of the dramatic finale.

And he explained why he was pleased his striker took the second penalty despite missing the first, saying: “We are building our identity and model around responsibility.

“They took responsibilities on the pitch and we have to respect that. You can fail and make a mistake, but we’ll learn from this difficult experience. It’s useful for the future.”

On Isidor, Le Bris said: “He’s disappointed, like the team. But football is like that. You can make mistakes but you have to learn from them. It’s the best way to improve and grow.

“The team is still young and learning from experiences, this will be a big one for sure.

“I am sure he can put this behind him, 100%. You have to do it when you are a player with his talent and ambition. You have to deal with difficult experiences. The keeper made two good saves, they weren’t poor penalties. We have to move on.”

Isidor took to social media after the game, posting on X:  “Feel like a big slap in the face, and the worst day of my life because all of us know how I love this club.

“I would like to apologise to my teammates, every single fans and everyone at this club for what happened tonight. I feel really ashamed, but i promise you that i will come back stronger from this.”

And Le Bris was keen to point to the positives on the back of what was an excellent Sunderland display.

Burnley haven’t lost at home this season and are now unbeaten in their last 14 games, but the Black Cats recovered from a tricky opening spell and took the game to the Clarets, creating the best of the opportunities even before the penalties.

Le Bris said: “It’s a tough place to play. We struggled for the first 20 minutes because they were very good with short passes and long diagonals in behind. We were prepared for that but it’s different when you face it on the pitch.

“After that we were more aggressive high up the pitch and started to dominate the game. We created chances, probably five or six big chances during the game. We can be disappointed we didn’t score but we showed we can be consistent.

“We showed we can be very competitive. We are consistent, can create danger. We are not clinical, it’s clear. If we were clinical we could have five, six, seven or eight points more. We are still in the bracket (automatic promotion) which wasn’t expected at the start of the season.
