West Brom caught in Tottenham-like controversy after incident today

Sam Allison was correct not to give Swansea City a penalty against West Brom on Saturday, Keith Hackett has said.

On January 4, the Baggies drew 1-1 in South Wales thanks to a strike from Tom Fellows, but Darnell Furlong seemed to handle the ball during the goalless period.

Allison determined that the defender’s mistake was unintentional, but it made little difference because Joe Allen scored in the closing minutes to painfully give the home team a point.

After Furlong seemed to handle the ball in the box, the former PGMOL chief expressed his opinion in an exclusive interview with West Brom News.

“With the ball hitting the defender’s hand, the Swansea incident is very similar to the Tottenham one,” Hackett remarked.

“Accidental for me and not worthy of a penalty kick.”

The decision to not reject Anthony Gordon’s goal in the 2-1 loss to Newcastle after the ball struck Joelinton’s hand infuriated Tottenham.

With Joelinton and Furlong both escaping penalty, it appears that officials are being instructed to be less stringent when making decisions in this area.

After Saturday’s Championship action, the Baggies are currently sixth and will remain in the play-offs for the time being after Allen scored a late goal to split the points.
