Former Astros Reliever’s Cubs Contract Details Emerge

Details of the former Astros reliever’s Cubs contract are revealed.

Hector Neris, the set-up man for the Houston Astros, was lost to the free-agent market over the weekend.

Thus, how much did the Houston Astros save by giving Hector Neris a chance to relieve?Or, perhaps more crucially, how much of their Josh Hader transaction was funded in part by allowing Neris to walk?

This past weekend, Neris inked a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs. Neris played for the Astros for two seasons, including as a member of the 2022 World Series squad.

The Athletic is finally revealing the specifics of Neris’ deal. A one-year contract with an option was the rumored component of the agreement. Neris will earn $9 million in 2024. The Cubs own a $9 million club option in 2025.

There is a twist, though. Neris can convert the team option into a $9 million player option in 2025 if he plays 60 or more games for the Cubs in 2024.

Astros are aware that he’s most likely an excellent fit. Throughout his two seasons at Houston, Neris appeared in over 70 games. He has actually been a workhorse throughout his Major League career, serving as both a set-up man and a closer. Over six seasons, he has cleared at least 60 appearances.

Neris might spend two seasons in Chicago, particularly if he maintains his 1.71 ERA and 6-3 record from the previous season.

Either way, Neris was probably not returning to Houston, even if Hader was signed by the Astros. Three of the Astros’ best set-up guys were given permission to pursue free agency. The first to sign is Neris. Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek, the other two, are still searching for a deal.

The Astros can undoubtedly feel okay about what they gave Hader—$19 million annually—after seeing what Neris received. They only paid $10 million more than Chicago did for Neris, a reliever who was about to enter his 35th season, in exchange for a young closer who might be the best in the league.

Furthermore, it ignores what Maton and Stanek will ultimately obtain.

The Cubs are benefiting from the Neris trade. It also somewhat improves Hader’s contract, which was the Astros’ all-in move to get him.
