‘Why’ – Fabian Hurzeler hits back at Joao Pedro claim after Christian Walton clash at Ipswich Town.
Reaction to Brighton’s victory over Ipswich Town Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler thought Joao Pedro’s card for a challenge on Ipswich Town custodian Christian Walton was justified. Pedro, who engaged in a physical battle with the Ipswich defenders throughout the 2-0 victory, collided with the former Brighton custodian in the 54th minute. The Brazilian striker was chasing a long through-ball when he lifted himself off the ground and wiped off Walton with great speed. The home crowd chanted for a red card, but referee Tony Harrington handed a yellow.
Brighton went on to win the physical match at Portman Road, thanks to second-half goals from Kaoru Mitoma and substitute Georgino Rutter. “Why,” Hurzeler replied when questioned by Sussex World if his star striker could have received a red card. “I think, well, he comes too late, he has no malicious intentions, he doesn’t want to injure him, therefore I don’t Never expect to see a red card for this. Mitoma scored Albion’s first goal shortly after Walton was injured. Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna was asked if his custodian was still drowsy after Mitoma’s feeble effort slid through his fingers. “I have not watched the collision back,” McKenna added. “Perhaps it’s worse than I saw at the time. I thought he’s left one in on the goalkeeper, he [Pedro] knows what he’s doing.
“Was that a red card?” I didn’t scream for one. I’ll have to ask Christian how he felt about it again. McKenna continued, “I’ve been asked about it a few times, and I believe he left a little amount on the custodian. It’s what it is. Football happens. The referee issued a yellow card and dealt with it. We won’t cry too much about it.” The victory was Albion’s first in eight Premier League games, propelling them to ninth place ahead of Sunday’s trip to Manchester United. “Yeah, I think we controlled the game,” Hurzeler remarked. “We defended well, and particularly in the second half, we were able to create more opportunities. We stayed patient, we stayed in our structure, we tried to play more vertically in the second half, and therefore I think we deserve to win.”
