Verdict given on Rangers hiring St Mirren’s Stephen Robinson to replace Philippe Clement
Because Rangers easily defeated Aberdeen at Ibrox in what was their most comprehensive, dominant, and cohesive performance of 2025 to yet, only days after CEO Patrick Stewart threw his weight behind the Ibrox manager—he has their full “backing.” Although it appears that Philippe Clement will survive the season, it remains to be seen if he will continue to lead after that. Stewart contends that there is no “silver bullet solution” that involves just firing and replacing managers. Although the chief executive acknowledges that Rangers’ problems extend well beyond the dugout, acknowledging that Clement is not the best person to take on Celtic and that both things are not going well behind the scenes are not really mutually incompatible.
But if Clement left later in 2025, who would the far-flung second-place team in the Premiership look to? Prior to appointing the Belgian, Rangers were linked to Pascal Jansen, the former manager of AZ Alkmaar, although he currently has a deal with New York City FC of the MLS. Though somewhat tenaciously, Kevin Muscat is still brought up. The belief is that the 50-year-old Northern Irishman needs to establish himself at a sort of “stepping stone” club before he can actually be considered for one of the largest positions in the nation, even though Stephen Robinson’s work at Motherwell and St Mirren is respectable.
