Kalvin Phillips says Leeds United sold a player for just £1m who is now one of the best in the Premier League

After leaving Leeds for Manchester City in 2022, Phillips had a very challenging couple of years before joining

Ipswich on a season-long loan in the summer.

After joining West Ham on loan in January of last year, the 28-year-old suffered greatly after playing a bit-part role

in City’s treble-winning team.

Phillips, who has teamed up with former Leeds teammates Jack Clarke and Leif Davis at Portman Road, has been

able to deflect attention by moving to a team like Ipswich, who are riding high after consecutive promotions.

Phillips claims that if his former team had gained promotion, choosing between Leeds and Ipswich in the summer

would have been a “close call.”Leeds and Man City had come to an agreement over a deal.

Phillips makes claim about Leif Davis’ England prospects

During his tenure at Leeds, Phillips was one of the top players in his position; in fact, he played for England 31 times.

Although Phillips is now far from returning to the England squad due to the decline in his form, he is aware of what

it takes for a player from a lower-tier club to make an impression.

Additionally, Phillips predicted that Davis, a former Leeds and current Ipswich star, would follow in his footsteps in

an interview with the East Anglian Daily Times.

According to Phillips, Davis is already among the Premier League’s top left-backs and will soon be called up to the

Three Lions team.

“I was surprised that he wasn’t called up to the last squad,” he remarked. He was excellent, in my opinion, against

Tottenham. He is unquestionably among the league’s top players. I simply believe that there is room for a naturally

aggressive left-back, which is most likely how Thomas Tuchel will choose to play.

It seems like I’m anticipating Leif’s call-up more than he is. I don’t want to put him under any pressure, so I haven’t

really talked to him about it much, but I do feel like his moment is coming, and I just want him to be able to grasp it

with both hands when it does.

Davis was sold by Leeds for £1m, now shining in the Premier League

Given that he was sold for under £1 million in 2022, Davis is undoubtedly one of Leeds’ most frustrating transfer

decisions in recent memory.

Nevertheless, nobody could have predicted at the time the direction his career would eventually take, especially

following a less than successful loan stint at Bournemouth.

Going down to come up was undoubtedly the wisest course of action for Davis’ career, and the Premier League is a

clear example of that.

This season, Davis, 24, has produced more opportunities than any defense in the division, surpassing players like

Trent Alexander-Arnold.
