Nottingham Forest in talks over selling “fantastic” £20m player this month
The Tricky Trees are looking for a new striker this month, but any newcomer will likely have to play second fiddle to Chris Wood, considering the New Zealand international’s outstanding form in front of goal this season. Wood now has 13 league goals this season, playing a key role in his team’s surprising push for Champions League qualification.
Forest are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez for a fee of £35 million.
Nuno Santo’s team is familiar with Spatak Moscow striker Manfred Ugalde, who has a strong goal-scoring record in the Russian Premier League this season.
Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas and Rob Dorsett have said that a deal for Taiwo Awoniyi to leave this month will not happen if a replacement is not found, despite rumors of a new striker joining.
According to Florian Plettenberg, West Ham United is interested in signing Awoniyi, suggesting he may be leaving shortly.
Forest are attempting to negotiate a cost of £20 million, although this amount may need to be reduced for the Hammers to reach an agreement.
Given that the Tricky Trees are unwilling to sanction a move unless a replacement is found, their readiness to move forward with an agreement to sell the Nigerian may imply that they are certain they have located a suitable target.
It would be a shame to lose the 27-year-old, who has played an important role in reestablishing Nottingham Forest as a Premier League team since joining ahead of the 2022-23 season.
The former Union Berlin player scored ten goals in his debut Premier League season, and despite injury problems in his second season, he still managed to contribute nine goals in 20 appearances.
Given the level of Wood’s performances this season, it was always going to be a difficult task for the Nigeria international to force his way into contention, thus he may believe a move is necessary for the sake of his career.
If Forest find a suitable replacement and can sell the striker for roughly £20 million, it may be a good deal for all sides, especially West Ham, who are currently short on forward alternatives with Niclas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio sidelined.
Awoniyi has been “fantastic” at times for Forest, so it will be painful if he moves on this winter, but it may be the right decision.
