Matchday Memories: On This Day 1984 – Watch Bobby’s Boys Claim Cup Replay Win As Wolves Wilt
On this day (16th January) in 1984 former Sky Blue striker Bobby Gould, now in charge at Highfield Road, was happy to see his club eventually push West Midlands’ Division One rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers out of the F.A.Cup at the third try.
The Wolves were struggling in the league this season (see later) but managed to force a 1-1 draw in the original Third Round meeting at Highfield Road on 7th January. Graham Withey‘s sixth minute effort was canceled out eleven minutes later by Wayne Clarke.
In the Molineux sequel three days later the stalemate score was replicated, this time it was City who had to answer to a Mel Eves goal after 69 minutes and Trevor Peake obliged with just five minutes remaining.
Today’s second match returned back to Highfield Road and the Sky Blues made no mistake in front of 17,482 supporters winning by three clear goals with Wolves’ goaltender John Burridge obviously not covering himself with glory.
Wolves had really won at Anfield the Saturday before but City’s Steve Hunt spurred City to the 3-0 triumph scoring their second goal two minutes before the interval with a 25 yarder leaving Burridge stunned! City’s other goals came from (currently Steve’s fellow CCFPA member) Graham Withey.
His first was a header from a header from (now current CCFC club host) ‘Harry’ Roberts on 25 minutes (which Burridge should have dealt with) and his second, which wrapped up the game, was a tap-in after Burridge spilled a shot from Steve.
Bobby’s Sky Blue Boy’s lined up as follows (CCFPA members underlined):-
Raddy Avramovic, Brian Roberts, Micky Adams, Micky Gynn, Trevor Peake, Ian Butterworth, Gerry Daly, Steve Hunt, Graham Withey, Keith Thompson and Nicky Platnauer
Sky Blues supporters will remember that, like Bobby, Micky Adams was a former player who eventually went on to coach CCFC.
Keith is the brother of fellow CCFPA member and former Sky Blue striker Garry Thompson
The vanquished Wolves side, managed by Graham Hawkins, that day comprised:-
John Burridge, John Humphrey, Geoffrey Palmer, Peter Daniel, John Pender, Alan Dodd, Tony Towner, Wayne Clarke (sub. Steve Mardenborough), Sammy Troughton, Mel Eves and Daniel Crainie Referee:- D.Shaw
Wolves had a number of men with Sky Blue connections on their books this season apart from substitute Steve Mardenborough who started his professional career with CCFC.
Also at Molineux as well Steve were shortly to become Sky Blues Kenny Hibbitt and Graham Rodger (also both now CCFPA members) and Martin Bayley.
In the two Division One league games between the clubs this season there was a goalless draw at Molineux in November and a 2-1 win for the Sky Blues in April when a sixth minute penalty from Gerry Daly and a goal from Mick Ferguson four minutes from time settled matters, though ‘Livvo’ did score Wolves’ consolation against his old club!
Mick (who was on back with the Sky Blues on loan from Birmingham City) scored three goals at season’s conclusion which helped to put his parent club down in twentieth position two points fewer than the Sky Blues safe in nineteenth! 1983-84 was a dismal season for the Midlands as aside from Brum, our opponents Wolves also plummeted down bottom by a country mile along with Notts County in 21st.
Liverpool clinched the championship by three points against runners up Southampton.
