Burnley: Scott Parker drops important update on Jonjo Shelvey talks

Burnley head coach Scott Parker has revealed that talks will continue with former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who is currently on trial with the East Lancashire club.

The 32-year-old has returned to England this month after his contract was terminated with Turkish Süper Lig outfit, Eyupspor, just five months after signing for the Istanbul-based outfit.

It was exclusively revealed by Football League World last week that the former Three Lions international had been training with the Clarets ahead of their recent FA Cup success on penalties against League One side Reading last weekend.

However, despite those developments, Parker has stated that a concrete decision is yet to be made regarding the former Swansea man’s immediate future at Turf Moor but conversations will be had in the coming days.

As previously mentioned, after the exclusive revelations made by FLW over developments concerning the experienced deep-lying midfielder, Shelvey has continued to train with the Championship’s second-place side at their Gawthorpe training base, as he looks to impress the onlooking Parker in a bid to earn a permanent move.

The former Fulham and AFC Bournemouth boss referenced Shelvey’s application in such a short sample size of training sessions but kept his cards close to his chest when asked about the possibility of an imminent conclusion to proceedings.

“He’s still training at the moment, yes,” Parker told the Burnley Express in the lead-up to a pivotal encounter with promotion rivals, Sunderland.

“He’s been with us now for a couple of days now, three or four days training with us. We decided to bring Jonjo in, we understand his quality and just wanted to have a closer look,” he added.

“We’ve not made a decision yet and we’ll have those conversations in the coming days with Jonjo on how I see things and where he sits with it as well really.”

“I’m not really sure at this present moment in time,” the Clarets head coach said when asked whether the former Newcastle man was closer to striking an agreement than not.

“It’s been such a short space of time that Jonjo’s been here. But he’s been first class since he’s come in, applied himself in the right way. But it’s still too early to say,” he concluded.

Jonjo Shelvey would add sufficient depth and quality in the short term for Burnley

Despite having the likes of Josh Brownhill, Josh Cullen, Hannibal and Josh Laurent to call upon, the addition of Shelvey would provide a welcome boost in terms of further depth and quality for Parker.

Shelvey’s vision on the ball has been well-documented over the years, with his ball-striking ability and composure in the middle of the park almost effortless on so many occasions.

The Burnley boss has made it clear that further options in this department would be a possibility after seeing Han-Noah Massengo join Ligue 1 outfit, Auxerre, until the end of the season, whilst the aforementioned Laurent in particular, has found himself in and out of the starting lineup since moving from Stoke City.

Furthermore, Shelvey has 70 appearances, 14 goals and as many assists at this level under his belt so far, as well as playing over 275 times in the top flight, meaning a short-term contract for the former promotion winner with Newcastle should be an option which the Clarets press forward with in the coming days.
