Despite being on the verge of the playoffs, Saints are expected to regress in 2024
The New Orleans Saints are coming off a disappointing 9-8 season, but there is little hope that the squad will be able to jump over the hump by 2024.
The 2023 season was particularly poor for the New Orleans Saints. Despite playing in the ailing NFC South, the Saints finished with a 9-8 record, one win short of winning the division. In the end, nine wins weren’t enough, and New Orleans missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
Despite the disappointing year, it’s acceptable to be positive about the team’s prospects. It doesn’t take much to swing the outcome of a few games for a playoff squad. Surely, that is what the Saints will strive to accomplish this offseason. However, not many media members are sure that New Orleans will pull it off.
The Saints have already been considered to as the most gloomy team entering the summer, and others argue that they will likely regress next season. In a recent CBS Sports article, Jeff Kerr identified five teams that are expected to suffer significant losses by 2024. One of the clubs mentioned was the New Orleans Saints.
Saints predicted to take a significant step back in 2024
Kerr recognized that New Orleans’ position in the NFC South might avoid a significant decline, but the team’s cap situation is difficult to manage. Kerr claims that the Saints lack the ability to improve from their current 9-8 record.
“New Orleans can still win the NFC South in 2024, but with Dennis Allen as head coach, is the ceiling 9-8? The Saints lack a strong front office structure and a skilled head coach to maximize the potential of a team that should be stronger than its record suggests.

There could be some validity to what Kerr says. There are plenty of doubts about Dennis Allen as a head coach, and the Saints aren’t equipped to sign big-name players in free agency. So, other from the draft and a few small signings, next season’s roster will be very identical to this year’s.
The Saints’ offensive coaching staff has undergone changes, with Klint Kubiak taking over as offensive coordinator. If Kubiak improves the offense and New Orleans chooses guys with quick impact, the Saints have the potential to improve significantly next season.
