Cowboys Urged to Avoid Free Agency Move for Saints QB

Cowboys Urged to Avoid Free Agency Move for Saints QB.

Unless something extraordinary happens, the Dallas Cowboys will start quarterback Dak Prescott in 2024.

Nevertheless, whether or not Prescott is available, they will probably bring in another quarterback to the squad.

Writer at DallasCowboys.com Patrick Walker believes that there are still many unknowns. Walker examines a number of

pending free agents in an article published on February 13. There are names on the list like Gardner Minshew II, Jacoby

Brissett, and Ryan Tannehill. However, Walker makes a succinct but unambiguous rejection of New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston.

Special Recognition: Jameis Winston Walker wrote, “I’ll keep this one simple with a no thank you.”

Despite not starting any NFL games, Winston made seven appearances in 2023. He finished 25 of 47 throws for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions overall.

Winston is a downgrade in comparison to some of the other alternatives, such as Minshew. However, a major focus of the piece is on the Cowboys’ current roster rather than those they could add.

Trey Lance and Cooper Rush both still have a year on their respective contracts, although their combined salary cap hit is just short of $8.2 million. Considering the tightness on cap space, the Cowboys would prefer to lower that.

Comparing Cooper Rush to Trey Lance

Lance and Rush are diametrically opposed from the Cowboys’ perspective. Rush is a quarterback with a solid but not high ceiling who has proved to win games in the NFL. Lance is a highly regarded prospect, but he has yet to put together a stretch like Rush.

Lance’s experiences with the Cowboys and, prior to that, the San Francisco 49ers have contributed to this. Lance has only made four starts, with two coming in 2021 and 2022. Over four games, his stats (46 completions on 83 attempts, 635 throwing yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions) are not particularly impressive.

Rush’s five-start span in 2022, however, saw him go 4-1 with similarly dismal figures. Another point to consider is his 7-year tenure with the organization, as opposed to Lance’s.

Rush’s salary cap hit is far lower than Lance’s, but Lance’s cap hit of $5.31 million is guaranteed. Dallas may let him walk, but not to save money.

Cowboys WR Speaks on Dak Prescott

Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb recently addressed the situation with quarterback Dak Prescott. Lamb’s mother appeared to take jabs at Prescott following Dallas’ Wild Card loss, but Lamb wants to make it clear there is no beef.

On February 15, Lamb addressed the situation on Micah Parsons’ podcast, The Edge.

“I love my dog, he knows that,” Lamb said. “Dak can definitely get us to the Super Bowl. He simply needs more leaders, which is why I am pointing to myself. “I can help him.”He already has a lot on his plate.

In 2023, Lamb and Prescott enjoyed their best year as a team yet. Prescott and Lamb connected on 135 throws for 1749 yards and 12 touchdowns.
