After 26 games, the Canaries are in eleventh place in the Championship, three points behind sixth-place West Bromwich Albion, and are currently in play-off contention.
It’s still unclear where Norwich will end the season, as Thorup’s team has struggled greatly this season with inconsistency.
Although Norwich has the second-best goals per game average in the division (1.7), they also need new attacking energy because top scorer Borja Sainz is expected to miss the next six games due to suspension. As a result, they seem to be considering a move for Jones.
Norwich City’s transfer interest in Peterborough United’s Ricky-Jade Jones
As per a recent update from Darren Witcoop, Norwich have launched an enquiry for the pacey forward amid stiff competition for his services.
Norwich are described as the “latest club” to have made a bid after a proposal from Cardiff City was turned down, with Football League World having first revealed the Bluebirds’ interest in the 22-year-old.
Jones is rumored to have interest overseas as well. Bundesliga team Freiburg is thought to be an admirer, while Middlesbrough is said to be watching but won’t pursue a trade until top scorer Emmanuel Latte Lath departs the Riverside Stadium this month due to intense interest.
His future at Peterborough is still up in the air, though, as he is now approaching the last six months of his contract. If he leaves as a free agent, the club will be able to collect a sizeable, tribunal-determined sum for the forward because of his age.
The Posh forward, who can play on the wing or as a striker, beat players like Kylian Mbappe and Alphonso Davies to become the quickest football player in the world in 2024.
Jones is known for his electric speed and has also been fairly prolific in front of goal for Posh, having scored on 25 occasions across all competitions over the last season-and-a-half.
Just six of those, however, have come in league action this term for Peterborough, who are currently languishing just two points above the third-tier drop zone.
Norwich City offered caution over Peterborough United, Ricky-Jade Jones transfer interest
Following the emergence of Norwich’s interest, FLW asked our resident Canaries fan pundit, Zeke Downes, if a potential cut-price deal for Jones represents the sort of move his side should be looking to make.
Zeke is wary of the significant jump from League One to the Championship, despite being heartened by Jones’ age and goal return over the past 18 months and expressing faith in the important decision-makers at Carrow Road.
“I definitely think that getting a player that’s homegrown will help us,” Zeke stated to FLW.
“He’s at a pretty excellent age but has a fair amount of experience and plays in an attacking area as well, which is really beneficial.
However, Peterborough is clearly a step down, and we’re not sure if he’ll be able to make the leap.
“I personally don’t know too much about him, but it’s a pretty good (goal) return for him. If they think he’s worth pursuing then I’m all for it.” “I wouldn’t say no if it’s going to be a cut-price deal, but obviously you don’t want to be filling a squad spot with a player who can’t make that jump.”
