Southampton recall Charles from loan at Sheffield Wednesday
SAINTS have recalled midfielder Shea Charles from his loan at Championship team Sheffield Wednesday, the Daily Echo understands.
Charles, 21, has excelled during his 24 appearances for the Owls under former Saints coach Danny Rohl, registering a goal and four assists.
Saints apparently had until midnight on Wednesday, January 15, to recall the Northern Ireland international and look to have made a very late call.
Saints believe Frenchman Lesley Ugochukwu, 20, will continue at the club for the remainder of the season but Chelsea might yet elect to recall him from his loan term.
Charles is seen as a clever, athletic and strong midfielder, who might potentially flourish in the systems established by new boss Ivan Juric.
Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri addressed the issue in a supporters’ forum, hours after stating Saints sought Rohl to become coach.
“Of course we like him, but what can we do? It is beyond of our hands,” Chansiri stated, as published by Sheffield-based daily The Star.
“In my view, he is not ready for the Premier League. Southampton in this scenario he cannot help, Southampton need a better player than this.
“Let’s see. If they do that, maybe we do something. Let’s see. Someone hurt us then we can injure them as well, let’s see.”
Charles, whose 22nd birthday is not until November, is ready to play Premier League games for Saints since he does not need registration.
The Daily Echo claims Wednesday might be given the option to take Charles on loan again but this would need an extra loan fee.
Charles, who is known in the locker room as a leader for his nation, is considered by Saints as a potential crucial player – especially for next season.
