Matt LaFleur Announces Packers Coach is Leaving Team soon

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur made a significant revelation Tuesday at his last press conference of the 2024 season that will reorganize his coaching staff for the upcoming campaign. LaFleur informed reporters that veteran quarterback coach Tom Clements will retire, according to Lily Zhao of FOX 6. Regarding Clements, the head coach of the Packers stated, “He will definitely be missed.”Given that Clements has been with Green Bay for 14 years, this is really significant news for the organization. It’s astonishing that the 71-year-old quarterback coach has worked with Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, and Brett Favre.

In the modern NFL, it is nearly unheard of to find that kind of continuity for a specific position. After serving as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills for the previous two seasons, the 71-year-old Clements joined the Packers in 2006. Under the guidance of then-head coach Mike McCarthy, Clements was the Packers’ QB coach for six seasons (2006-11) before he was promoted to offensive coordinator for three seasons (2012-14).

The Packers finished sixth (27.1 points per game), eighth (26.1), and first (30.4) in scoring during his three seasons as offensive coordinator. Clements served as an offensive coordinator for three years before joining the Packers as assistant head coach for two seasons in 2015 and 2016. After a few years away from Green Bay, Clements joined the Arizona Cardinals as their quarterback coach and passing game coordinator, working under Kliff Kingsbury. Kyler Murray, who was just beginning his NFL career, was a client of Clements.

Clements returned to Green Bay as their quarterbacks coach in 2022, though, so his time in Arizona was short-lived. Before the squad gave Love the starting job, the seasoned coach had one final session with Rodgers.Clements will be missed because he has been crucial to Love’s growth over the past two years. However, replacing a coach with Clements’ level of experience working with quarterbacks and on the offensive side of the ball won’t be simple for LaFleur.
