Do you remember these bars which used to be on 1 Queen Street in Norwich?

Gundry Whites, Drummonds, and Whites were among the bars and venues that occupied the building during the 1980s. It was known as the City and Ale Wine Bar in the early 1990s before the following establishments moved in:


Hogshead 1996-2004: This pub replaced City and Ale Wine Bar which had been on the premises since 1993. It was a

very popular pub in the late 1990s and served a wide range of real ales and beers. It was the last time the premises

were used as a public house before being transformed into bars and nightclubs.

Noir Bar and Cafe 2009-2010: This venue hosted a large variety of entertainment under one roof from live music to

film screenings and dance classes to tea parties. It was home to a cafe, described a mix of Parisian chic and a Norfolk

cosy tea room, along with four bars.

Between 2010 and 2012, Knowhere was one of Norwich’s busiest bars, with lines extending down

Queen Street, particularly on Saturday and Thursday evenings. It was renowned for presenting up-and-coming musicians from the

area and had numerous guest DJs. However, if a visitor was unfamiliar with the city at the time and enquired about the bars,

The response ‘Knowhere’ always caused some misunderstanding because I was occupied that night.

Carnival 2012: The circus-themed pub aims to deliver more live music to young people in Norwich when it launched in

February of 2012. UEA students were the bar’s target audience, and both resident and guest musicians performed a variety of genres.
