According to reports, Manchester United is vying with Liverpool for the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers’
star player Joao Gomes, while there has also been an update on Alphonso Davies, another target of Ruben
Amorim. Gomes came through Flamengo’s academy and made 122 appearances in their first team before Wolves
came calling for him in January 2023, paying Flamengo £15 million (€17.8 million or $18.3 million) for his
services. The 23-year-old has adapted well to life in the Premier League and has established himself as one of
Wolves’ top players. His outstanding performances have earned him a spot in the Brazil national team and put him
on the radars of some of the biggest clubs in the world.
According to Football Insider, Manchester United is “racing” against Liverpool to sign Gomes, with a January
move possibly on the cards. Gomes has won nine caps for Brazil so far, and United officials are “keeping tabs” on
him and have “had scouts” at recent Wolves games. United officials are looking at teams near the bottom of the
table to see if there are any players that can “step up” and be signed for a good price, and Gomes is on their
shortlist. Pundit Danny Murphy called Gomes “outstanding” and “terrific” after he excelled against Tottenham
Hotspur earlier this year as well.
Wolves’ recent financial difficulties might aid United, but they will need to stave off Liverpool in order to get
Gomes.
After failing to sign Martin Zubimendi last summer, Liverpool is still looking for a new defensive midfield player.
Arsenal is currently pursuing Zubimendi.
Even though Wolves could have to make a sale, Vitor Pereira, their new manager, won’t want to lose a key player
like Gomes in January.
In the past, Wolves were predicted to seek £60 million (€71.2 million or $73.3 million) for Gomes. Before United
can pay such a hefty price, they will have to let go of players like Antony, Casemiro, and Marcus Rashford.
Left-back for Bayern MunichRuben Amorim is also interested in Davies, seeing the Canadian star as an ideal fit for
his system.
Davies is also wanted by Real Madrid, and Bayern has been frantically attempting to keep him on past June.
According to the Spanish publication Diario AS, Davies is not happy with Bayern’s most recent contract offer.
By this weekend, the 24-year-old is anticipated to decide whether to extend his contract with Bayern or stay.
Davies is quite open to joining their elite team, thus Madrid is in the lead to get him, but United is still very much
in the running to recruit him.
Man Utd transfers: Triple exit possible; Rashford slammed
Academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho could follow Rashford out of Old Trafford as INEOS
chiefs are rumored to approve a fire sale in order to stay within PSR regulations. Chelsea is pursuing Mainoo,
while Napoli is in talks for Garnacho. The departure of Mainoo would be especially hurtful as he is a local player
who appears destined to become a top-tier international star. Teddy Sheringham, a former United striker, has
criticized Rashford for his decision to ask for a new challenge, saying, “Every player in the world growing up still
wants to play for Manchester United and he’s saying now that he wants a new challenge somewhere. I don’t
understand it.”
“Fergie would’ve booted him out the door by now if he’d have said that while he was in his tenure. He’s obviously
going to go somewhere, but I think his days are numbered at Man Utd.”
