Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl appeared to have been motivated by controversial images of his Sheffield United counterpart’s post-derby celebrations, smiling while telling The Star: “I am looking forward to March.”
The Owls are about to return from a two-week international break, which began with a narrow 1-0 Steel City derby defeat at Sheffield United, with Tyrese Campbell’s goal the only shot on target.
Videos of United manager Chris Wilder leading a joyful late-night sing-along in a Sheffield pub hit social media in the hours that followed, sparking online discussion. Wednesday fans have accused Wilder of disrespect; in one video, Wilder appeared to be singing the ‘Sausage roll’ chant, which Blades fans had adapted from a Wednesdayite chant sung in honor of their boss.
Röhl smiled as he told The Star about the situation: “If you ask me, if the opponent has a song about me, it may not be the worst thing. Perhaps they recognize that they have a lot of respect, as I interpret it. I would not do this, but if the opposing stadium shouts about me rather than their own team, well, they can think whatever they want.”
United’s victory was either side’s first on Derby Day since September 2017, following three goalless draws. When asked if he felt disrespected by his opposite number’s evening sing-song, Röhl smiled again, implying a boost of motivation ahead of their return to Hillsborough in March.
“I cannot guarantee, but I can promise you,” he continued before pausing and redirecting his topic. “It makes no sense to discuss this topic. He (Wilder) is experienced enough. I have an opinion about what he does or does not do, and I have a preference for how I celebrate wins or not. It’s all good.
He signed out with a grin and a flirtatious wink, saying, “I am looking forward to March.”
