Mike McCarthy is entering the final year of his contract with the Cowboys as head coach, and after a severely disappointing playoff performance against the Green Bay Packers as heavy favorites, the hope is that Zimmer will prepare the defense for bigger games like that one.
It will be fascinating to see whether Zimmer’s scheme differs significantly from Dan Quinn’s. The new defensive coordinator has several years of head coaching experience with the Minnesota Vikings.
For much of the last decade or more, the Cowboys have been a great regular-season club but have struggled in the postseason. Zimmer expects to arrive in Dallas and have an instant effect, putting the Cowboys back on top in the final year of McCarthy’s contract.
