Tragedy as schoolboy, 12, is killed and five other members of his family including twin brother injured when BMW crashes off motorway during ‘poor weather’

A 12-year-old British kid was killed and five other members of his family, including his twin, were injured when a BMW crashed off a Belgian freeway.

According to Belgian media, the youngster and his family were involved in an accident on the E40 highway in Veurne, West Flanders, about 1 a.m. on January 8 while on their way to the French border.

The family’s BMW X5 with a British licence plate reportedly lost control and fell on its roof between the freeway and an exit road.

According to a statement issued by local police following the collision, there were six people in the car. One of them, a 12-year-old kid of British nationality, was flung out of the vehicle and died from his injuries.

According to the local prosecutor’s office, investigators are investigating if the incident was caused by poor weather and a ‘unadjusted speed’. The boy was apparently one of four children in the automobile, including his twin brother.

While four family members apparently received minor injuries, one was critically injured but is not believed to be in critical condition. All five are being treated in a hospital.

The British family involved in the crash has yet to be identified, although the Jewish Chronicle claims that the youngster attended Menorah Grammar School in Edgware, London.

The accident involving the youngster and the family occurred on the E40 highway in Veurne, West Flanders, at around 1am on January 8 while en route to the French border, according to Belgian media.

The family’s BMW X5, with a British number plate, reportedly lost control and fell on its roof between the motorway and an exit road.

According to local media, no one witnessed the incident, and the police were only summoned because of the BMW’s automated emergency warning system.

‘The early findings reveal that terrible weather conditions and aquaplaning on the road, along with an excessive speed, may have been the reasons of the accident,’ the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. ‘The crash did not involve any other automobiles.

The probe is ongoing.’ The family was reportedly returning from Antwerp when the tragedy occurred near Veurne. Following the incident, the city exit remained closed for several hours.

According to the Jewish Chronicle, the boy’s untimely death occurred just two weeks before he was scheduled to celebrate his bar mitzvah with his twin brother.

According to the publication, his classmates at Menorah Grammar School responded ‘in varied ways’ when they learnt of his death.

On January 9, the school informed parents via email that ‘a very dear talmid [student]’ had died.
