When the identity of Salah was revealed prior to the Merseyside derby match at Anfield on October 21, Everton supporter Joel Barwise yelled obscenities. In addition, he made taunting gestures towards supporters in reference to the 1985 European Cup final tragedy with 39 fatalities between Juventus and Liverpool.
The accusations were accepted by Barwise, 26, before the Sefton Magistrates’ Court. When questioned about why he had yelled racist epithets and made fun of the catastrophe, he replied, “Because I’m an idiot.”
Senior crown prosecutor Angela Conlan called Joel Barwise’s acts “disgraceful,” adding, “Joel Barwise no doubt thinks of himself as a loyal Everton fan, but his actions bring shame to his club.” When the identify of a significant Liverpool player was revealed, he ridiculed a terrible football mishap and yelled racist epithets.”
Barwise, of Childwall, Liverpool’s Bentham Drive, entered a guilty plea to aggravated harassment of a racial or religious nature that caused fear or anxiety through writing or speech. In addition to receiving a three-year stadium ban, he was fined £500.
Salah scored both goals as Liverpool defeated Sean Dyche’s team in the Premier League. The Egyptian player finished the game with a stoppage time effort after successfully converting a penalty in the 75th minute.
