Chelsea have just started negotiations to sign £60m Newcastle United target

Chelsea have just started negotiations to sign £60m Newcastle United target.

Chelsea have begun conversations with one player that Newcastle United highlighted as a potential target last month.

Newcastle’s summer transfer prospects have been hampered by Premier League rivals attempting to get Everton’s high-demand player, Amadou Onana, first.

According to Voetbalkrant, the Blues are the first to initiate discussions for the midfielder, who is expected to leave Goodison Park soon.

Onana has been one of the Toffees’ top performers since signing in 2022, despite being part of a rather weak group of players who have frequently been threatened with relegation in recent years.

The 22-year-old’s strength and ability to use his length to intercept and tackle have made him a valuable asset to Sean Dyche, who is eager to keep the midfielder.

However, it appears that this will be extremely difficult to accomplish, particularly given Everton’s financial difficulties and the need to pay for their new stadium, which is slated to open next season.

The likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle have all shown a real interest in the Belgian international and it’s believed that a fee of around £60m would be enough to secure his services.

Onana is exactly what Newcastle are looking for

Forget about the price for a moment; Newcastle are anxious to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer, having been caught out in the middle of the park numerous times this season.

In January, it was believed that Kalvin Phillips was the number one target, but Newcastle were unwilling to pay the loan price that Manchester City was requesting.

Eddie Howe has been experimenting with his team, with Lewis Miley recently playing in a deeper role against Nottingham Forest, moving Bruno Guimaraes forward.

But, ideally, Howe would like to bring in someone like Onana this summer who can really hold down that position and push the squad to the next level.
