Next West Brom manager: ex-Everton boss emerges as new front-runner after major Wicky update.
An experienced Premier League manager has become the new favourite for the West Brom position following a vital update on Raphaël Wicky. An experienced Premier League manager has emerged as the new frontrunner for the vacant manager’s job at West Bromwich Albion, after negotiations with former Young Boys head coach Raphaël Wicky were said to have failed. The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday that West Brom had entered into talks with Swiss manager Wicky to replace Carlos Corberán, who left Albion to join Valencia on Christmas Eve. However, John Percy, the reporter behind the original story, has now claimed on X that Albion “have ended talks” with Wicky after he was unable to assemble his preferred backroom staff.
Some bookmakers have set former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche as the frontrunner for the job after he left Goodison Park last week following two years in charge. Dyche, 53, was twice promoted from the Championship while at Burnley. He was previously connected with the West Brom post in 2022, following Steve Bruce’s resignation.

The Northampton-born manager has yet to make a public statement since being fired by Everton, and there have been no confirmed reports of talks with West Brom, but his availability may come at a good moment for the club if Wicky is ruled out as a possibility. Since the Wicky news emerged, he has been at the top of several bookies’ odds lists. The 47-year-old former Switzerland international, who has also led Basel and the Chicago Fire in the United States, was the front-runner and is the only coach reported to have been interviewed for the position at the Hawthorns thus far, but chairman Shilen Patel appears to be looking elsewhere.
Who else is in the running to manage West Brom?
Chris Brunt and Damia Abella are currently in joint interim charge of the Baggies, but they have only won once in five games since Corberán’s departure, and the club will be hoping to find a permanent solution soon to ensure their place in the Championship play-offs. René Hake, a Dutch coach who worked as Erik ten Hag’s assistant at Manchester United before his dismissal, is also in the running. Hake has vast management experience in the Netherlands, having led teams such as FC Twente and Utrecht. Steven Schumacher, the former Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle manager, has also been connected with the post. Tony Mowbray, for example, is said to be keen to return to management after successfully treating colon cancer.
