A round-up of key Championship headlines – including updates from Sheffield United, West Brom, Luton, Stoke City and more.

Bristol City will aim to bridge the gap between themselves and the play-off places when they make the trip to face Coventry City that have had an inconsistent start to life under new boss Frank Lampard.

The Robins have lost just one of their last seven league matches in the Championship and were good value for a hard-fought 1-0 home win against relegation-threatened Derby County in their last league fixture.

Bristol City boss Liam Manning criticised his players for paying too much respect to their Premier League opponents Wolves in the first half of their FA Cup third round defeat at the weekend, but did claim there were plenty of encouraging signs in a much-improved second half.

The Ashton Gate side are just three points behind sixth place West Brom, who are still searching for a successor for Carlos Corberan after his exit to Valencia.

With that in mind, Bristol World takes a look at a major development in the Baggies managerial hunt as well as a look at other updates from the likes of Sheffield United, Stoke City and Luton Town.

Luton Town confirm managerial appointment

Luton Town have named Wycombe Wanderers head coach Matt Bloomfield as their new manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Bloomfield replaces Rob Edwards at Kenilworth Road just a week after the former Wolves defender left the club by mutual consent.

Edwards famously led the Hatters to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2023 and was praised for his work in the top-flight despite the club’s relegation. However, this term he failed to meet expectations and departed with the team 20th in the league table.

Bloomfield has traded a League One promotion push with Wycombe for a relegation fight in the Championship with Luton and describes the opportunity as a “genuine honour and a privilege.”

Luton Town face Preston North End in Bloomfield’s first game in charge this weekend. They are due to play host to Bristol City on the third to last game of the season on Saturday 21 April.

West Brom set sights on two-time promotion winning boss

Former Everton and Burnley boss Sean Dyche has emerged as the frontrunner to become the new West Brom Albion manager after talks with Raphael Wicky broke down.

West Brom are one of Bristol City’s main rivals for a play-off place and currently sit sixth in the table after a mixed run of results under interim boss Chris Brunt.

Liverpool World understand that the Baggies are keen to get a new boss before the end of the transfer window and claim the hierarchy are huge admirers of Dyche, who previously steered Burnley to automatic promotion on two occasions in 2013/14 and 2015/16.

Dyche is renowned for his ability to create a well-organised defensive while his team typically excel in areas such as distance covered and set piece goals. The 53-year-old exceeded expectations with Burnley for the best part of a decade and was also able to beat the drop with Everton despite a 10-point deduction last season.

He is also known for working shrewdly in the transfer market with a limited budget.

Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday consider £7m move for forward

Championship strugglers Stoke City are sweating over the future of top scorer Tom Cannon, who could be recalled by his parent club Leicester City this month after joining the Potters on loan over the summer.

Cannon has scored nine goals in 22 appearances and has shown huge signs of promise in the Championship this season.

The Foxes, who sit 19th in the table, face a conundrum on whether to bring Cannon back to the squad to compete with Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka in attack, or allow him to remain at the Bet365 Stadium until the end of the campaign, according to Stoke Sentinel.

Meanwhile, separate reports from the Yorkshire Post claim that both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday would be willing to make a blockbus

ter move for the £7m rated forward if he was to return to the King Power Stadium in January.
